Antiqua et Nova: The Vatican Document on the (AI) Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

Published on

Antiqua et Nova is a newly released document issued jointly by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education on January 28, 2025. Titled “A Note on the Relationship Between Artificial and Human Intelligence,” this document aims to address the ethical and humanistic challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in the modern world.

From a Catholic theological perspective, this document evaluates the moral and human implications of artificial intelligence. Rooted in the Church’s philosophical and theological tradition, it emphasizes human dignity, the responsible use of technology, and the promotion of the common good. The document addresses the rapid advancements in AI, which raise critical questions about human identity, ethical responsibility, and the future of society.

The Church views AI as a powerful tool that can significantly enhance human progress but, if misused, can also pose serious risks. This document advocates for a balanced approach to AI development-one that respects human dignity, promotes justice, and facilitates holistic human development.

Artificial intelligence must be understood within the broader context of the boundless potential of human intelligence, which is a gift from God. The document suggests that scientific and technological advancements, when used responsibly for the protection of creation and the common good, receive the Church’s full support. At the same time, it raises concerns about AI’s ability to imitate human intelligence and make autonomous decisions, which could lead to moral dilemmas and crises of truth in public affairs.

The document strongly emphasizes the moral responsibility involved in AI development and usage. While AI can be a powerful tool for human progress, it must always serve the common good and respect human dignity. The document warns against the misuse of AI for harmful purposes, such as invasions of privacy, exploitation through artificial creations, and the commodification of human resources. It also stresses the need for transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights in the design and deployment of AI systems.

Concluding with a call for a renewed understanding and appreciation of human intelligence and wisdom in the age of artificial intelligence, the document asserts that true progress is not measured by technological advancements alone but by how they contribute to human development, justice, and the common good. By fostering a “wisdom of the heart” that integrates reason, morality, and spirituality, the Church seeks to promote the responsible use of AI-one that ultimately leads to global peace, solidarity,
and holistic development.

This document is not just a guide for members of the Catholic Church but serves as a comprehensive roadmap for all people of goodwill in addressing the ethical challenges posed by AI. Grounded in the Church’s rich philosophical and theological heritage, it calls for a human-centered approach to technology—one that serves the common good, safeguards human dignity, and advocates for a more just and compassionate world through the responsible use of AI.
