We (Tonia, Joel, Jesvin, Hilda, Fr Anish and I), the Syro-Malabar Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle, Melbourne missionaries, embarked on our mission trip to Odisha from April 22 to May 2 this year. It was not just a journey but a transformative experience that left an indelible mark on our hearts and will shape our future mission endeavours.
The Missionaries of Odisha – the MST fathers, sisters, and catechists inspired us with their unwavering dedication. Despite facing persecution, they continued their work with zeal and love, embodying the true spirit of missionary work. Their stories of sacrifice and perseverance were touching.
Preaching the Gospel at all Times and using Words, When Necessary, became a reality during our mission. While formal talks had their place, we shared the gospel in simple, everyday interactions. Whether playing with the children, assisting in daily tasks, or simply being present, our actions spoke volumes about our faith and commitment.
A lesson we will never forget is the Contentment in Nothingness. Visiting the villages, we were struck by how the people were genuinely happy and content despite having little material possessions. Their smiles and how they cared for one another demonstrated a deep, abiding faith that needs no worldly wealth.
One of the most significant lessons we learned during our mission was the importance of Trusting in God’s Providence. Venturing into unknown territories without a clear plan, we relied entirely on God’s guidance and protection. This trust was richly rewarded, as we witnessed countless blessings and miracles along the way.
The trip also highlighted the role of the Syro-Malabar Church as a Missionary Church. In Odisha, we saw firsthand the church’s dedication to spreading the faith in challenging environments. The priests and nuns we met exemplified this missionary spirit, tirelessly working to build communities and nurture faith amidst adversity.
Finally, the mission experience moulded us because mission moulds missionaries. The journey was not just about serving others but also about our growth and transformation. We returned with a renewed sense of purpose, deeper faith, and a commitment to continue living out the gospel daily.
The Future of the Mission: Our mission trip highlighted the crucial role of young people in the Syro-Malabar Church and the importance of moving from maintenance to mission. The work of the missionaries in Odisha, forming communities from scratch, contrasted with the more maintenance-focused efforts in other regions. We will be carrying out more mission journeys in the future to be a MISSIONARY CHURCH.
In conclusion, the India mission was a journey of faith, love, and profound realisations. It reinforced the power of sacrificial love, blind trust, and the impact of living out the gospel through actions. The experiences and lessons from this mission will continue to inspire and guide us in our future endeavours within the Syro-Malabar Church and beyond.
